Weekend in New Jersey

Our Weekend Memoirs

We flew to New Jersey on Friday and stayed at Oldbridge with banabear's younger brother, Anthony.

Saturday night, banabear and I, together with Anthony and his wife Donna, went out with friends, Doug and Caroline. After some cocktails at their home, they treated us to a sumptuous steak dinner.

--A special birthday party--

On Sunday afternoon, we had a party in honor of Mark's and Anthony's mom who turned 80 this year. Family and close friends gathered together to celebrate her birthday.

A Beautiful Worship Song

O magnify the Lord with me
Let us exalt the Lord together.
- Psalm 34:3

Have a blessed Sabbath!

Friday Quotes 4

"Our lives are not determined by what happens to us,
but by how we react to what happens;
not by what life brings to us,
but by the attitude we bring to life.
A positive attitude causes a chain reaction
of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes.
It is a catalyst.. a spark that creates extraordinary results."

The above quote (author unknown) shows us the power of keeping a positive attitude in life. We all do have our ups and downs but having a positive outlook gives us the will to move on.

Drive in Style

My former boss back in the Philippines loves collecting cars. And he takes good care of every car that he owns. One favorite in his collection is an antique Mercedez Benz sports car. It was already several years old when he bought it but he had it beautified and refurbished and made it look sparkling brand new. When he's on the road in his green Cheding (our nickname for his Benz), he always get a second look from people who admire his car.

When Benz first came out with Musso, he was one of the first to own in our city. However, he was not contented with the car's original accessories and had some of them changed into chrome accessories. It made his vehicle looked flashy, stylish and attractive. The little things that he changed like the handles, side mirrors and other objects made a big difference in the car's over all look.

Keeping Your Files Safe

I store most of my important information and pictures in my laptop instead of putting them on hard copy. In school, I used to write down my notes but later on opted to using my mini laptop because it was easier and faster to type my notes in class and I do not have to carry bulky notebooks and writing pad to school.

I keep two laptops: the mini notebook is for school while the regular laptop is for all-around use: blogging, surfing, storing pictures and other files, and all other internet activities. In order to safeguard my important documents and numerous pictures from being lost in case something happens to my laptop, I would transfer them to my external hard drive.

I found out that there is another way of storing or backing up important files, and that is through online storage. Some offer free storage for a limited space of, for example, 2 GB. Another unique feature of online storage is the ability to share one's files through the internet.

If you keep important files in your laptop, make sure you take good care of them by backing up or storing them in a safe place. After all, you do not want to lose them when you least expect it, do you?

One Weekend Years Ago

Our Weekend Memoirs

These old photos of my baby, Nathan and his sister, Rozene, were some of the few photos I brought with me when I left for the U.S.

These were taken at the boating lagoon of Mambukal Mountain Resort, a tourist destination in my home province, Negros Occidental, Philippines.

Our weekend getaway at Mambukal (together with nanay and our helper) hold fond memories of my loved ones.

The Father Knows

I am thousands of miles away from my family and people whom I can count on through thick and thin. However, inspite of being alone in this foreign place, and inspite of the numerous trials I continue to encounter, I am optimistic that I will survive because I have a Savior who is there to guide me along the way. My Father knows what is best for me. I entrust everything to Him.

Happy Sabbath everyone!

Human Growth Hormone

Those of us in our forties are aware that our skin is no longer as firm as it was when we were in our twenties or even in our thirties. Lines start to form. And unless we have high metabolism, it is easy to gain weight at our age unless we are careful about our food intake and we exercise regularly. As we continue to advance in years, we also begin to experience health issues like weakening of the bones and the immune system, and high blood sugar. These are some of the effects when our levels of human growth hormones start to decline.

The human growth hormone, a natural chemical produced in our pituitary gland, is responsible for the growth of the human tissues. When we reach the age of twenty-one, our body stops growing and the levels of our HGH start to decline. That is when we start to experience problems with our body.

Fortunately, medical science has developed some of the best HGH supplement which can help strengthen our bones, reduce fat, control our blood sugar level, boost our immune system, assist in calcium retention and increase our muscle.

The Swing

When I was a kid, I loved riding on a swing. I guess every child do. I remember back in kindergarten and prep, my classmates and I would race to the school playground and head towards the swing. Everybody wanted to be the first to grab a seat. We would hold a contest on who among us can "swing" the highest.

Our old house was walking distance to the Capitol Lagoon and back in those days, there was a playground filled with two or three swing sets. There were afternoons when some neighborhood kids and I would walk to the Capitol Lagoon together with our nannies where we would spend hours playing on the swing.

Those were the days when life was simple and being on top of the world means swinging the highest.

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!
-Robert Louis Stevenson

In Memoriam

As Filipinos commemorate the twenty-sixth year death anniversary of a great Filipino hero, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr., may we be inspired to continue to work for the betterment of our nation.

Our fight is not over yet. We still need to free our country from the chains of poverty, indifference, and corruption.

Arrival Speech of Ninoy Aquino
(the prepared speech was never read
as he was assassinated as he stepped off the plane
at the Philippine International Airport
on August 21, 1983.)

I have returned on my free will to join the ranks of those struggling to restore our rights and freedoms through non-violence.

I seek no confrontation. I only pray and will strive for a genuine national reconciliation founded on justice.

I am prepared for the worst, and have decided against the advice of my mother, my spiritual adviser, many of my tested friends and a few of my most valued political mentors.

A death sentence awaits me. Two more subversion charges, both calling for death penalties, have been filed since I left three years ago and are now pending with the courts.

Three years ago when I left for an emergency heart bypass operation, I hoped and prayed that the rights and freedoms of our people would soon be restored, that living conditions would improve and that blood-letting would stop.

I could have opted to seek political asylum in America, but I feel it is my duty, as it is the duty of every Filipino, to suffer with his people especially in time of crisis. I never sought nor have I been given any assurances, or promise of leniency by the regime. I return voluntarily armed only with a clear conscience and fortified in the faith that in the end, justice will emerge triumphant. According to Gandhi, the willing sacrifice of the innocent is the most powerful answer to insolent tyranny that has yet been conceived by God and man.

Rather than move forward we have moved backward. The killings have increased, the economy has taken a turn for the worse and the human rights situation has detriorated.

During the martial law period, the Supreme Court heard petitions for habeas corpus. It is most ironic after martial law has allegedly been lifted, that the Supreme Court last April ruled it can no longer entertain petitions for habeas corpus for persons detained under the Presidential Commitment Order, which covers all so-called national security cases and which under present circumstances can cover almost anything.

The country is far advanced in her times of trouble. Economic, social and political problems bedevil the Filipino. These problems may be surmounted if we are united. But we can be united only if all the right and freedoms enjoyed before September 21, 1972 are fully restored.

The Filipinos asked for nothing more, but will surely accept nothing less, than all the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the 1935 Constitution - the most sacred legacies from the founding fathers.

Yes, the Filipino is patient, but there is a limit to his patience. Must we wait until that patience snaps?

The nationwide rebellion is escalating and threatens to explode into a bloody revolution. There is a growing cadre of young Filipinos who have finally come to realize that freedom is never granted, it is taken. Must we relive the agonies and the blood-letting of the past that brought forth our repulbic or can we sit down as brothers and sisters and discuss our differences with reason and goodwill?

I have often wondered how many disputes could have been settled easily had the disputants only dared to define their terms.

So as to leave no room for misunderstanding, I shall define my terms:

Six years ago, I was sentenced to die before a firing squad by a military tribunal whose jurisdiction I steadfastly refused to recognize. It is now time for the regime to decide. Order my immediate execution or set me free.

I was sentenced to die for allegedly being the leading communist leader. I am not a communist, never was and never will be.

National reconciliation and unity can be achieved, but only with justice, including justice for our Muslim and Ifugao brothers. There can be no deal with a dictator. No compromise with dictatorship.

In a revolution there can really be no victors, only victims. We do not have to destroy in order to build.

Subversion stems from economic, social and political causes and will not be solved by purely military solution: It can be curbed not with ever increasing repression but with a more equitable distribution of wealth, more democracy and more freedom.

For the economy to get going once again, the working man must be given his just and rightful share of his labor, and to the owners and managers must be restored the hope where there is so much uncertainty, if not despair.

On one of the long corridors of Harvard University are carved in granite the words of Archibald Macleish: "How shall freedom be defended? By arms when it is attacked by arms; by truth when it is attacked by lies; by democratic faith when it is attacked by authoritarian dogma. Always and in the final act, by determination and faith."

I return from exile and an uncertain future with only determination and faith to offer - faith in our people and faith in God.

Friday Quotes 3

The Filipino is worth dying for.
-Sen. Benigno S. Aquino, Jr.

Today, twenty-six years go, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr., a Filipino patriot and hero, was assassinated upon his return to the Philippines to challenge the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos. Aquino, who was on a self-imposed exile in the U.S. was shot in the head as he stepped off the plane at the tarmac of the Philippine International Airport (now known as the Ninoy Aquino International Airport) and died on the spot. His death sparked protests amongst Filipinos which led to the now-famous EDSA Revolution, a peaceful revolution which toppled the Marcos dictatorship and restored democracy in the Philippines.

On Home Maintenance

We moved to our home in Coconut Creek on August 1 although it was not until August 3 and 4 that our things in storage were delivered. It is now August 21 but we've managed to finish only about 75% percent of the work around the house. We still have a few boxes to open, we need some new furniture and our home decors have not been put up yet. Right now, I am halfway through with my library and hubby is still working with his office downstairs. The garage is also a major task and I hope he's able to finish it soon.

After we are done putting all the rooms in order, my next major task is to clean the floor. The previous resident had the house cleaned before we moved in but I am not very satisfied about it although I am happy that they had the carpet upstairs steamwashed.

I am glad that we have porcelain tile floor downstairs for the foyer, living room, family room, dining room and kitchen. They are harder and denser than many ceramic tiles and, therefore, can withstand heavy loads. Aside from being stronger and long-lasting, porcelain tiles have low water absorption so they are stain resistant. They are also resistant to harsh cleaning products, scratches and fading, and are, therefore, easy to maintain and clean. It is not easy cleaning a two-story, five bedroom house but having porcelain tile flooring on the ground floor makes my task lighter.

Being Prepared

Health care in the U.S. is probably one of the best in the world but could be very expensive. It is, therefore, a must for one to have health insurance.

A few months after I arrived in the U.S. two years ago, my husband brought me to an eye specialist for check up because he planned to have me undergo lasik operation. However, I was found to have cataract and was advised to undergo a cataract surgery. The operation would have costed him more than three thousand dollars had I not been covered under his health insurance. There are a lot of advantages of having health insurance: lower medical costs, easy access to routine medical check ups, less expenses for laboratory tests, among others.

For those who are financially strapped, there are low cost health insurance at very affordable rates. A prudent man must be prepared for the inevitable and one way to do so is by having health insurance.

Sunday Fun with New Friends

Our Weekend Memoirs

When banabear and I moved to SoFla two months ago, we did not have MUTUAL friends. One Monday evening while driving around Deerfield, we stopped by a bar where we met a very nice Fil-Am couple, Sylvia and Dave, who became our first mutual friends.

Yesterday afternoon, we were invited over to their house for barbecue. They introduced us to their other friends Jill, Al and Kathy, Frank, and Sandi. All very nice peeps. Our afternoon barbecue lasted way until 10:30 PM.

Let me share with you my weekend fun.

Goodbye, Back Pain!

I have been suffering from chronic lower back pain even way back in the Philippines. When I got here, I think my sleeping position has aggravated the pain. Our mattress was not leveled correctly and although it still looked new, we felt it sagging on the sides when we lie down. My husband HATED our mattress because it was very uncomfortable especially that his side sagged more due to his weight.

Yesterday, while going out of Kohl's, we passed by Mattress Firm and banabear decided we take a look inside at the different mattresses on display. The store carries top of the line mattresses like Stearns and Foster, Tempur-Pedic, Sleep Number, Posturepedic, Sealy, among others. We were made to lie down on the different mattresses so that we will be able to determine which bed makes us the most comfortable given our lower back problems. Among the different kinds, we decided on the ClassicBed with adjustable base by Tempur-Pedic . The mattress which has no coils is soft but firm and conforms to the contours of our bodies. The adjustable base enables us to program and adjust the head and foot of the mattress with the aid of a remote control. Since my primary problem is my lower back, I can make the foot of the mattress rise to help reduce my lower back pain. Banabear's problem is acid reflux and by programming the head of the mattress, he can make it go higher. We can also sit comfortably in bed with our laptops without the need of pillows.

Our Tempur-Pedic mattress was delivered this afternoon. We were given one free SymphonyPillow (also by Tempur-Pedic) along with the mattress so we only had to buy the second one.

With our new mattress, we look forward to a restful sleep tonight. Finally, we're able to lie down comfortably. It's now, bye, bye, back pain!

Friday Quotes 2

Stop determining your worth and value by what other people say.
Be determined by what the Word of God says.
- Joyce Meyer

Experience will tell us that we cannot please all the people all the time. No matter what we do, there will always be people who will find fault in us.

What is important is not what the world thinks, but what is right and pleasing in the eyes of God.

Our Swim Harness

Banabear and I love to swim laps; therefore, when we moved to Florida and house-hunted around Broward County, one of his primary considerations in choosing a house was a swimming pool.

We love our backyard pool at our new place in Coconut Creek. However, it is small and we cannot do long laps with gusto. The other day, banabear installed the swim harness which he ordered online three weeks ago. This is designed to eliminate the hassle of making frequent turns when swimming laps in small pools. It is an elongated plastic braided cord attached on one end to a stretchable cord which banabear connected to the ceiling of the patio directly adjacent to the pool, and on the other end to a belt tied around the waist of the swimmer. The swim harness allows us to swim in place for as long as we can.

Yesterday, I tried the swim harness but since it is not much fun swimming in place, after a few minutes, I opted to swim back and forth the pool.

Back in Blogosphere

After a week of hibernation, I am back in blogosphere.

We transferred to our new home in Coconut Creek on August 1 and since then I have been very busy unpacking and putting the house in order. Last Tuesday, the movers delivered the last of the crates and from then on I was, literally, so sore and very tired to do some blogging after working around the house the whole day. As of today, I am not even halfway finished. So far, I am 98% done with the kitchen, 95% with the dining room and 80% with the living room. Banabear is in charge of the family room and he's about 75% finished. We still have 3 bedrooms to work on, the office (he's in-charge of his office), the library (my task), the patio, the garage (his task). After we're done unpacking all the boxes and putting things in order, we still have some decorating to do. Moving to a new home is fun but a lot of work. Hard work. The good thing about our new home is the swimming pool in our backyard where we can take a respite any time of the day. Now, we do not have to go all the way to 24 Hour Fitness to swim laps. Well, 24 Hour Fitness's pool is 25 meters long and ours is just small but banabear bought a swimming harness so that we can do stationery "laps".

When I am not working around the house, I am busy making trips to the store. I also have my on-going two-hour driving lessons. Due to my hectic schedule, I even had to cancel my early morning briskwalking routine.

Yesterday, however, my high school classmate who is now in Aventura spent her day off with us and it gave me a chance to rest from my chores. She became our first house guest and although our house was still a bit in disarray, I was happy that she spent the night with us. I hope she's able to get another day off before she heads back to New York so that we can spend time with her again. Otherwise, we'll just meet in December when I go to New York for Christmas vacation.

Sunday at Waikiki

Our Weekend Memoirs

One Sunday afternoon I went to Waikiki to meet Hazel who was visiting Hawaii with her husband. I was introduced to Hazel here in blogosphere and when she came to Aloha State, I decide it was time we meet in person.
