In Appreciation

It's time again to thank all of you who've been visiting my blog. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share with you my thoughts.

Thank you, too, to June's top EC droppers:

And to my regular visitor from Marlboro, NJ, Caroline D.

Getting Fit

Banabear and I are 24 Hr Fitness members even when we were still residing in Honolulu, so last night, we went to the 24 Hr Fitness club at Coral Springs. It is a huge club, bigger and more complete (they even have a kid's club) than the 24 Hr Fitness clubs we've been going to back in Honolulu. We are especially happy that they have an indoor pool 25 meters in length because we love to do laps. When we transfer to our home in Coconut Creek, the nearest 24 Hr Fitness club would be the one in Coral Springs. We had a pretty good workout last night. We did a couple of laps and called it a night. As I have said before, I am bored about gym activity (I prefer sports activities) but love lap swimming.

I planned to walk around the park across the street this morning but the rains started to pour even before I could change into my walking gear. We also have a pool here at the condo but it's an outdoor pool and with the lightning and thunder accompanying the downpour, banabear says it's not safe to venture out in the rain. I hope the rains will subside so that I can walk around at the park. In the meantime, I'm going to prepare breakfast.

Time for Serious Dieting

Yup, it is time that I seriously do something about my increasing weight (and waistline). The same goes with my banabear. We have been complaining about our rapidly increasing weight. Several times, we've attempted to go back to Atkins Diet (which worked successfully for us before) but ended up breaking our diet after a few days. Between the two of us, he is the more disciplined one. I would always find some alibi here and there to eat the "forbidden" food but I am the first one to complain when I can no longer fit into my clothes.

Well, today, he decided that we get SERIOUS about getting rid of our unwanted fats. He cleaned our cupboard, getting rid of the carb-laden goodies. He also said that we should start doing some exercise. He suggested that we look for the nearest 24 Hour Fitness branch here. I am not really ecstatic about the idea. I am bored about gym. I'd rather do sports than spend time at the treadmill, exercise bikes or the eliptical trainers. Even group aerobics bore me.

Back in the Philippines, I was into streetfighting (which includes kickboxing) and badminton, activities which helped me maintain weight. I was also part of the bowling team. Of course, my food intake then was not as heavy (and as rich).

Well, I'll probably do some walking around the park tomorrow. With SoFla's hot and humid weather, it will be just like I am inside a sauna sweating my fats away.

Saying "I Do" In Style

A person's wedding day is a very special event in one's life. The bride and groom wants that day to be perfect. Every detail from the theme, color, venue, invitation, ceremony, attire, the decoration, menu, favors, music to the reception and even the minutest detail like the sitting arrangement.

Much attention is given to the bridal gown and how the bride looks during that special day. However, gone are the days when the bride would hug all the spotlight. Today, the groom's attire is given equal importance, too.

In formal weddings, especially in Western countries, grooms are attired in tuxedos. A stylish and well-fitting tuxedo makes an ordinary-looking guy look smart and sophisticated. A groom in a dapper suit and a bride in a beautiful gown are one of the ways to make one's wedding day stand out.

Scenic Sunday: A View from the Top

Taken from the balcony of our unit at Harrison St., Young Circle, Hollywood Blvd., FL.

OJ, Anyone?

Orange juice is one of my favorite drinks for its sweet delicious flavor.

Orange, the sweet and juicy citrus fruit, is a good source of Vitamin C which is necessary for the proper functioning of our immune system. Aside from immune support, it is also a good source for antioxidant and protection against cardiovascular disease.

Spanish explorers introduced oranges to Florida in the 16th century. Before Mickey Mouse built his Kingdom in Central Florida, particularly in Orlando, the place was a sleepy town with lakes, pine forests and citrus groves, located mostly in Orange County.
When I visited downtown Orlando, particularly Orange County, I did not see any orange groves there. Instead, I was greeted with the sight of tall buildings. Well, I have not been around much in that area so I must've missed the orange trees which are still growing there.

There is, however, a section in Orange County Regional History Center that is dedicated to the birth and history of the orange industry in Central Florida.

I first saw the site for Disneyland back in 1953,
in those days it was all flat land-
no rivers, no mountains, no castles or rocket ships-
just orange groves, and a few acres of walnut trees.

Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

Today was a beautiful sunny morning so banabear and I headed to the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk. Named as one of the US top ten promenades, Hollywood Beach Broadwalk features a 2-mile long bricklined promenade lining with cafes, small shops, boutique hotels, ice cream shops, restaurants and bars facing the ocean. One can see runners, strollers, rollerbladers and cyclists enjoying the sun and the breeze while some visitors are seated on the sidewalk cafes having breakfast or relaxing while sipping on their tropical drink. There were also a lot of people enjoying themselves on the 7-mile stretch of white-sand beach.

After a short walk, we went to one of the cafes for breakfast. After which, we strolled along the strip, stopping by the small shops. We found a lot of cream colored tropical ala-Tommy Bahama shirts. I've been looking for these kind of shirts while we were still in Hawaii but could hardly find ones that banabear liked and they were also signature labeled shirts and, therefore, expensive. The ones we found at the Broadwalk shops were not only beautifully styled but affordable, too.

At the center of the promenade is the Hollywood Beach Theater where live music, concerts and dancing are being held almost daily, during the evening.

When I was living in Hawaii, the weather was cool (sometimes a bit chilly) so I almost never sweated even after spending the whole day outdoors. Over here, the weather is hot and humid so after about 30 minutes of walking, I was panting and sweating. LOL!

I am excited to go back to the Broadwalk next weekend for the 4th of July celebration.

One of my favorite MJ's songs, I'll Be There is a beautiful ballad about love.

The Fire Alarm

I got out of bed at around 6:30 this morning and was just about to sit down in front of the computer when the condo's fire alarm started to sound. Residents were ordered to leave the building using the stairs. We were staying on the 14th floor so it was quite a trip reaching the ground floor. Less than 5 minutes later, the Hollywood firefighters came to inspect the premises and assured the residents that everything was in order. What an exciting way to start our weekend!

Photo Hunt: Flags

The Hawaiian flag displayed here flew over the Lahaina Court and Custom House until 1898 when Hawaii officially became a US territory.

Arthur Waal Sr., the assistant postmaster of Lahaina at the time, was ordered to lower the flag of the Hawaiian Kingdom and raise the Stars and Stripes during a poignant ceremony in front of the Courthouse on August 12, 1898.

104 years later, on September 21, 2002, Arthur Waal Jr. brought this flag to its home at Old Lahaina Courthouse.

The Hawaiian flag was designed in 1812 during the reign of King Kamehameha I. Hawaii's eight major islands are symbolized by the 8 stripes, alternating white, red and blue. The British Union Jack represents Hawaii's historic ties with Great Britain.

Hawaii's flag is the only state flag to have flown over a kingdom, a republic, a territory and a state. Hawaii was admitted to the Union as the 50th state on August 21, 1959.

Night Out at Church Street Station

My first trip to Orlando was just short and it did not give me the opportunity to meet Mickey Mouse or Cinderella. However, I was able to explore nearby places like the Church Street Station in downtown Orlando.

Church Street is a nightclub district frequented by both young locals and Orlando visitors. The street is closed to vehicle traffic which makes it easy for the crowd to walk along the street (self and valet parking are available on the other side of the block). Aside from bars, there are fine dining restaurants, shops and entertainment.

It was constructed around Orlando's original train station and the establishments are housed on restored buildings.

Our first stop was Chillers, a party bar specializing in frozen drinks, daiquiris and slushies jammed with alcohol. Next stop was Latitudes, an outdoor bar located on the roofdeck of the same building housing Chillers. When we got there, it was already a "standing room only" atmosphere, hence, we were not able to stay long and instead went to the middle floor to Big Belly for some food.

Other popular attractions include the Cheyenne Saloon and Opera House which was built inside a former opera house and decorated with old west memorabilia.

Special Father's Day Celebration

Banabear, who is a BIG baseball and New York Yankees fan, had a special Father's Day treat from his two daughters: left field foul pole front row club box seats to the New York Yankees and Florida Marlins game at the LandShark Stadium (previously known as Dolphin Stadium) in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Here are some of the shots I took during our special Father's Day celebration.

Incommunicado

I have been rendered incommunicado since Saturday because of lack of internet connection. Banabear and I drove to Orlando early Wednesday morning and we stayed there for three days. When we got back to Hollywood on Saturday afternoon I was very disappointed to discover that I could no longer access the internet from our place. That explains my absence from blogosphere since Saturday.

As I am writing this post, we are back at Orlando to pick up banabear's SUV which was shipped from Honolulu two days before we left for Florida. Right now we are at Starbucks where I am able to get free access in the internet, thank to banabear's Starbucks card. In half an hour, we will be on the road again on a four-hour drive to Hollywood.

The Warrior is a Child

I survived a lot of painful trials and battles in my journey because the Lord is there to guide me every step of the way.

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;
He delivers them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
-Psalm 34:17-18

Banabear makes the best chocolate martini. He uses Godiva original chocolate liqueur, Godiva white chocolate liqueur and vanilla vodka. The martini glass is decorated with chocolate syrup and powdered Hershey's chocolate is placed around the rim.

It's creami-yummi-licious!

Outdoor Fun

One of the joys of living in Hawaii was the beautiful, almost perfect, weather. It never got too hot nor too cold, and I had never experienced humidity there. Because of the paradise-like weather we had, hubby and I would sometimes have moonlight dinners or lunches in the lanai to enjoy the cool Hawaiian breeze. When friends would come over for lunch or dinner, they also love to hang out in the lanai.

When we moved to South Florida, one of our primary considerations in choosing a house is the patio and pool. We have found a beautiful place which will be our temporary home for at least a year. It has a swimming pool in the backyard which overlooks a lake. The place is really beautiful. We are excited to move in and start decorating our new place. We brought with us from Hawaii our outdoor dining set which can sit six people. However, we are also thinking of looking for additional outdoor furniture for our new home. Now that we are in the mainland, I think we will have more styles and kinds to choose from at a more affordable price.

Stormy Afternoon in Orlando

It's 3 o'clock in the afternoon and I'm inside our hotel room at the Marriott Orlando Airport. Today is the first of banabear's two-day seminar on technical analysis and he is in one of the hotel's conference rooms for the seminar. Since I do not drive yet, and I cannot go on sightseeing tour on foot, I have decided to stay inside the hotel room and wait until he's done with today's seminar.

Last night, we explored Church Street and the surrounding areas of Orange and Wall Streets, downtown Orlando's nightclub district. One local in the bar we went to suggested that we try Chillers and Latitudes. We planned to go back to Church Street tonight but with the sudden downpour coupled with thunder and lightning, I am no longer sure it is wise to go on a nightout later. There is a storm warning on tv and Orlando is now included in the list. Bummer!

Thunder crashes.
Lightning flashes.
Rain makes puddles.
I make splashes.

Morning Drive to Orlando

Banabear and I woke up at 4:30 this morning to drive to Orlando. We did not want to get stuck in the morning traffic so we had an early start. It was a refreshing, albeit long, drive from Hollywood (where we are now temporarily staying) in South Florida to Orlando, Central Florida. Watching the sun rise is a beautiful sight. I have always admired the beautiful sunsets in Hawaii but the sunrise views in Florida are a sight to behold. I hope to be able to take a beautiful shot of the sunrise one of these days.

These sunrise shots were taken while I was inside a moving car so they're not very clear but they will give you an idea of how beautiful the sunrise is.

if we have waited in the darkness."

Stick To One Model

For our final essay in English Composition, we were made to choose our own topic. The following essay on the subject of marital infidelity earned me a grade of "A":

When Henry Ford was asked on his 50th wedding anniversary what his secret for marital bliss was, he reportedly said, "Stick to one model." Mr. Ford said that it is good to have friends. Husbands have guys they pal around with, and wives have girl friends they hang out with; nevertheless, as married individuals, there should only be one best friend in their lives, and it must be their spouses.

Unfortunately, we see breakdown of marriages brought about by spouses who do not sincerely take their vow of "sticking to one model." Statistics on infidelity issues vary. The accuracy of most of the studies conducted had been open to question because of the lack of candor and/or unwillingness to participate on the part of the respondents. However, highly regarded studies conducted by Philip Blumstein and Pepper Schwartz in their book, "American Couples: Money, Work, Sex" and Annette Lawson, author of "Adultery: An Analysis of Love and Betrayal" have led relationship experts to conclude that infidelity is a significant risk factor in marital break ups.

There are many reasons why people get involved in extra marital affairs. The most common reason given is the sense of disappointment in one's marriage. "Erring" spouses justify themselves by saying that the inattention, fighting, lack of understanding and harmony, drove them toward someone else. Marriage between imperfect individuals results in an imperfect union. However, instead of finding ways to mend the relationship, some choose to seek solace from someone who willingly offers them a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, a word of encouragement.

When an unhappy spouse receives care, attention and interest from a third party of the opposite sex, he becomes vulnerable to temptation. The spouse will start comparing the "new" person who makes him feel good and alive with the other party; and oftentimes, the other party will come out as the "bad guy." With the spouse's attention drawn towards the "new" person, he loses interest in saving his marriage and simply blames the other spouse, thereby causing further conflict.

Sometimes our environment, social groups, even the media can be a factor. When one is constantly bombarded by messages towards casual sex or pressured by peers that "if it feels good, do it", "you deserve better, dump him/her", or "life is short, enjoy!", this gives the person a "justifying" reason to stray from his marriage. Man is sometimes concerned about "immediate pleasures" without thinking about the end-results. Thus, we see married people engaged in adulterous activities because they're more concerned about their carnal desires and the selfish pursuit of their own happiness. We see broken relationships because commitment has taken a back seat to distorted values.

There are also people who unwittingly place themselves in a situation which makes them vulnerable to temptation. According to Shirley Glass in her book, "Not Just Friends: Protect Your Relationship From Infidelity and Heal the Trauma of Betrayal", 82% of the unfaithful partners she's studied have had an affair with someone who was, at first, "just a friend."

Meetings with a "friend" for a drink or a business lunch - alone; friendly phone calls; text messages, chat messages or emails - all these innocent contacts may lead to something deeper than "just friendship." Soon, the spouse resorts to secrecy and lies to further this "friendly relationship."

Some men will argue that there is no infidelity unless sexual contact is involved. However, when a line has been crossed from platonic friendship into a deeper romantic affection, an emotional affair develops which is also marital infidelity. Affairs do not have to be sexual in order to destroy a marriage. Internet affairs can lead to devastating results. And it is not uncommon nowadays for internet friendships to develop into sexual relationships.

To avoid falling into the trap of marital unfaithfulness, couples must set up proper boundaries on friendships with third persons of the opposite sex. It is a good idea to stay away from compromising situations that might create a way to start a dangerous relationship. What may seem like small indiscretions or "innocent" flirtation can add to major traps.

Infidelity threatens any relationship. It is a betrayal of trust to a party who has entrusted one's life to another. Marriage demands exclusivity by partners to each other. Infidelity, whether sexual or emotional, is a marriage killer. That is why the Bible admonishes us not to commit adultery.

The Green Creature

Banabear and I were lounging at the poolside yesterday morning when he noticed a green creature, about 12 inches in length, walking towards the dock. We do not know what it is but it probably belongs to the lizard family. Can you tell me what this creature is?

Morning Has Broken

Banabear woke me up at around six o'clock this morning and excitedly told me to go out and watch the beautiful view of the horizon from the harbor of the condo where we are staying. It was, indeed, a beautiful sight as the color of the sky changed at the breaking of the dawn, illuminating the calm waters.

We were standing on the dock for about five to ten minutes when we saw ripples on the waters which grew stronger and stronger. It was a very quiet and calm morning and there was no boat within the vicinity which could've caused the rippling effect. We, therefore, wondered why there was a sudden strong surge in the water. My very fertile imagination began to entertain thoughts about sea monsters or whales suddenly popping out of the water so I started to move back while at the same time admonishing banabear to move back, too. Two minutes later, the waters began to calm down. What could that be? hehe!

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the word

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day
