Back home in the Philippines, I always reserved time each weekend for manicure, pedicure and body massage.
Body massage time was scheduled on early Saturday afternoons. I have a chronic lower back problem (lower right side) and sister Antonia, a komadrona (homebirth midwife) who is a member of our church, can do wonders in alleviating my back pain. Another member of our church, Edna, who is a licensed physical therapist, is the best when it comes to full body deep tissue massage; however, since she has a hectic schedule, I only avail of her services when a "real need" arises.
Sunday afternoons were reserved for manicure, pedicure, foot scrub, and twice a month, hot oil treatment. This has been my routine since I started earning income, and could, therefore, pay for my own needs and wants. Bukay, who's been doing my nails for more than 10 years, until I left for the US two years ago, is not only good in nail cleaning and foot scrub, she gives excellent scalp and back massage at a very reasonable price.
Back then, I considered my "body treatments" a necessity. When I moved to the US, these became luxuries that I had to give up. Since I am still a full-time student, and, therefore, do not have the capacity to pay for my wants, I have to do my own nail cleaning routine. I once went to an upscale nail salon in Honolulu but except for the complimentary drinks and excellent customer relations (the lady who did my nails was also very nice), there was really nothing extraordinary about their service. As far as quality is concerned, Bukay, my manicurista back home, is better. As for my lower back problem, I had to rely on Salonpas. LOL!
Yesterday, thanks to my banabear who gifted me with a $100 worth Spa Finder gift certificate, I enjoyed an hour and a half full-body therapeutic massage at Serenity and Massage at Hawai'i Kai. Since we transferred to our new home, it is now easier to get to places where we want to go: less traffic, less distance. Teresa Papadopoulos, the therapist who serviced me was great. She specializes in Swedish, Deep tissue, Lomi Lomi, Usui Reiki, Shiatsu and Relaxation. After an hour and a half deep pressure full-body combination massage, I felt relaxed, rejuvenated and new.
