Birthday Dinner

Yesterday was a red-letter day because Banabear turned a year older.  To celebrate his birthday, we dined at Roy's Waikiki Beach.  Roy's, which is one of our favorite restaurants, has 36 locations around the world, seven of which are in Hawai'i (3 are in Oahu: Hawai'i Kai (the first Roy's restaurant), Ko Olina and Waikiki Beach).   

We've been to all three locations:  Ko Olina is a favorite because, among the three restaurants, it is the most accessible to Ewa Beach (our former residence.)  We celebrated Valentine's Day at the Hawai'i Kai restaurant.  For his birthday, we celebrated at the Waikiki Beach restaurant.

Aside from the ambiance, the extraordinary cuisine selection is what makes Roy's dining experience special. Although the different restaurants carry the classic Roy's signature dishes, each restaurant differ in their special menu depending upon the creation of their chef.

For banabear's birthday dinner last night, we ordered:

Hors d'oeuvres- Vietnamese Style Crispy Vegetable Spring Rolls (my constant favorite).  I especially love their dip.

Banabear's order: Hawaiian style mixed plate consisting of:
Hibachi grilled salmon with Japanese citrus ponzu
Roy's classic blackened island ahi with spicy soy mustard sauce; 
Sashimi; and 
Glazed grilled Hawaiian shutome tropical sticky rice with grilled Maui onion vinaigrette.

My order: Roy's Waikiki Resolution Prix Fixe consisting of:
Sashimi of cured Hiramasa (black river caviar, fingerling potato) -hors d'oeuvres
Big Island Hearts of Palm (pickled nectarine, radish, tarragon chips) - salad
Ricotta Agnolotti (sweet corn, peppers, pancetta)
Lobster Grenobloise which hubby loved (I don't eat lobster; he loves lobster)
Soy braised shortrib of beef ; and
Cheese and crackers (Big Island goat cheese gratin, grapes, spiced walnuts, blood orange marmalade, lavash crackers) - dessert

Drinks: Mango Passion Fruit tini ("shaken not stirred") for me; Back Russian for him.

Dessert:  Roy's melting hot chocolate souffle' (my favorite classic Roy's signature dessert made of flourless chocolate cake with a molten hot center served a la mode with vanilla bean ice cream).

Banabear was given his own special dessert, a surprise birthday treat from Roy's.
