My ABCs of Beauty and Wellness

"My ABCs of Beauty and Wellness" is another comfort book I brought from the Philippines.

Authored by the ageless, Cory Qurino, a Filipino columnist, civic leader and presidential granddaughter, this handy book is an alphabet of do's and don'ts on Quirino's beauty secrets to staying young.

Here are some interesting stuff contained in the book:

Antioxidants are the hottest stars in the health horizon. They have anti-aging benefits by preventing free-radical damage to your body's cells. A combination of the antioxidants A, C, E, Selenium, Glutathione, Copper, Zinc, and Manganese should do the trick.

Broccoli is one of the most nutritious vegetables you should include in your diet. Studies have shown that this curly-topped veggie, just like cauliflower, is rich in antioxidants, fiber and flavonoids believed to fight off cancer.

Color therapy can change your moods and outlook on things. Feeling sad? Wear something blue or violet. Tired? Use red or orange. Angry? Try green or white. Lonely? Pink will help.

Diet your way to a healthier life. While most understand the meaning of diet, in today's language, it actually means eating lifestyle, a more positive and proactive term. The word diet has negative connotations, because most people think it is synonymous to denial. What it actually means, in the eating lifestyle connotation, is eating only the food that is good for you.

Embrace a pine tree. No kidding! Did you know that a pine forest is charged with ions which are great for healing? This explains why the minute you walk into a pine forest or any forest for that matter, you will experience immediate relief and relaxation. And if you embrace a pine tree, or any large tree, your emotional stress and painful feelings can and will be absorbed by that tree. And, all the tree's goodness will flow towards you. Try it sometime.

Faith literally moves mountains. Faith is the belief in the power of miracles. It is that force that comes only from a fearless heart. And when a fearless heart believes, miracles will happen. Studies have shown that patients who practiced some form of faith healed faster than those who did not. You should keep the faith. There is a God in heaven who believes in you. Don't give up on yourself because God will never give up on you.

Garlic is an herb whose healing properties are legendary. It is also a natural antibiotic and a blood cleanser which boosts the immune system. A diet rich in garlic can help prevent hypertension and heart diseases.

Hugging heals. Hug your child, your parents, your friends today. Hug someone in need. A hug sometimes is the best remedy for a broken heart or a lonely soul. Be a healer today. Give him or her a friendly, loving hug. And watch the healing power of your hug work right before your eyes.

Insomnia or sleeplessness can be caused by a number of reasons such as emotional/mental stress, caffeine overdose, the use of certain drugs and tranquilizers, hormonal fluctuations, etc. Natural remedies may include an aromatherapy hot bath with drops of essential lavender oil, the use of herbal teas such as chamomile and peppermint, valerian root and St. John's wort, the hormone melatonin and a 10 - 20 minute meditation or relaxation technique to calm the mind.

Juice up your life daily with fresh fruits and vegetables. While fruit juice is more popular than veggie juice, they are all loaded with rich nutrients, enzymes and antioxidants. Give your body a healthy dose of juices from popular blends like apple and carrot, pineapple, guava and others using apple as the base ingredient.

Karate, along with other forms of martial arts is not just an ideal workout for your body but also great for self-defense. Others include taekwondo, aikido, judo, tetada kalimasada, etc.

Love is the most powerful force on earth. It is the greatest energy one can harness to heal oneself and others. Love comes from a giving heart, one that is unafraid to be hurt. But in order to unleash its full potential, love must be given away. Because love is not love until you do so.

Music, considered a universal language, can calm the turbulence inside you. Here's a tip to fight off stress: If you are angry, play some loud, hard rock or a heavy classical piece. Allow the music to absorb your anger or frustration. Then, after you have let it all out, play soothing new age or light classics to finally let you relax and reflect.

Negative thoughts and feelings invite a negative cloud to cover you. When you think a negative thought, you change the color of your aura and darken it with your gloominess. Do you know that the healthier your state of mind, the healthier your body becomes? When you think you are going to get sick and believe it, you will get sick. By contrast, when you think positively, you will attract only good things.

Oxygen is important to living. Getting the right amount of oxygen in our lungs can be difficult considering the pollution levels in the city. Make it a point to get out of the city and get a whiff of clean sea or mountain air. Your lungs need the break.

Prayers can create miracles. Do not underestimate the power of prayers to heal, to save lives, or to transform a person or situation. Include prayer time as part of your morning and evening ritual. Beginning and ending your day with a prayer will bring miracles into your lives.

Quercetin is a vitami C derivative that boosts the immune system against allergic conditions like rhinitis, sinusitis, and asthma. You might want to include this as a natural way to fight allergy.

Retreat from the rest of the world by shutting off cellphones, computers, fax machines even just for a weekend. Find a sanctuary where you can truly recharge your energies.

Avoid Smoking. Smoking can lead to respiratory diseases like emphysema and lung cancer. Nonsmokers on the other hand can suffer the same fate when exposed to second hand smoke. Nonsmokers should avoid smokers, as a general rule.

Do not wait for Thirst signals before you reach out for a glass of water. If your thirst signals are persistent, chances are, you are already dehydrated. Drink 6 - 8 or more glasses of water everyday. You can never overdose on water.

Understanding the meaning of life can be a lifetime pursuit. Wisdom comes from knowing that we learn more as we live more. Sometimes, it isn't knowing so much about find the answers to life's questions but knowing what questions to ask.

Vegetables should always be on your list of grocery items. The basic rule to remember: if it's green, it's a must-buy. But don't forget your usual tomatoes, squash, sigadillas, carrots, etc.

Well-being is the harmony of your mind, body and spirit. It is the holistic approach to true health. It is said that in order to heal the body, one must heal the mind and soul first. This proves the interconnectedness of the three major components of the self.

Yoga is the science of enlightenment and a universal way of life which has a philosophy and a set of practices on how to live in accordance with the universal law. Yoga has been prescribed by health practitioners as a must for improving one's flexibility, strength and general well-being. Its many poses involve exercises for both the body and the mind.

The Zest for living can only spring from a big, loving heart and a positive and open mind. Adopt an outlook of wellness by projecting goodness to happen to you.
