Getting Even

When I was younger and a person wronged me or my loved ones, I easily lost my temper and wanted to settle the score right on the spot. A couple of times, I have really done it. Age and experience have mellowed me. Most important of all, being around the right kind of people who live by their words, as well as constantly feeding on God’s Word helped a lot in changing my outlook in life.

I still get enraged when a person hurts me, or when an injustice is done, even to a stranger. However, I keep in mind what the Bible says: “Don't pay people back with evil for the evil they do to you. Focus your thoughts on those things that are considered noble.“ (Romans 12:17) “Don't take revenge, dear friends. Instead, let God's anger take care of it. After all, Scripture says, "VENGEANCE IS MINE. I WILL REPAY, says the Lord." (Romans 12:19). Revenge is not my job but God’s- and He will not let the evildoers get away unscathed with their evil deeds.

Unscrupulous parties who exploit the poor will one day feel God's vengeance. So will the man who molests young children and destroys their lives. The abusive or cheating spouse will not go free. God will punish every wrongdoing. Those who revel at other people’s misfortunes, liars who seek to destroy relationships, the gossip and rumormongers will account to the Lord every deed and word they utter.

So when a wrong is done and I want to get even, I’m neither to settle the score myself nor should I keep the rage inside. I’m to turn those feelings over to God and let Him deal with the wrongdoer in His own way.
